Pinstriping...What was still is

Vehicle Decoration - Popular for Thousands of Years

Did you know that hand painted decoration on vehicles has been around for centuries? Research and archaelogical discoveries revealed Roman Chariots were decorated with engraving and gold overlays embellished with various designs and motifs.

This type of art is nothing new. In the last millenium, wagons, hearses and even sea going vessels had decoration applied to the surfaces. This type of art added a certain amount of quality to the finished surface. 

Hand decor was not only popular on vehicles, but back in the good ol' days practically everything made had painted lines, scrolls, designs to enhance the appearance.

In todays mass produced society those little touches of artistic value have virtually disappeared. If we find an item with any sort of decor it is mass produced with no artistc value.

In the 1800's into the 20th century, hand painted striping appeared on the earliest motorized vehicles. Horseless carriages were always finisihed off with lines that followed the contours and angles of the painted wood or metal. It was the thing to do to enahnce the looks.

When cars started being mass produced, the manufacturers ha most of thier cars hand pinstriped usually following the beltlines. That ended around 1938 or so when Ford stopped striping production. It was too costly and the tastes of the buying public was changing.  

It wasn't until the 1960's when straight line striping started showing up again on vehicles from the maufacturers. GM, Ford, Chrysler, Dodge, all had a series of stripes painted donw the sides, hood and trunk areas. This was for good for the pinstripers. When one was wrecked and repaited they were called in to paint stripes on the repaired areas.

As of now, none of the manufacturers are doing any painted stripes. I think Buick was the last big car maker to do any striping and I haven't seen any in the last few years with factory applied stripes.  

If a car buyer wants striping, the dealerships are responsible for that. They wil pay a poinstriper to come in and do oneor many vehicles mostly with simple straight lines.

Nowadays there is no striping from the manufacturers and you rarely see a late model with any striping at all unless done by a custom pinstriper.

In 2012, the market for custom pinstriping on individual vehicles, which was popularized back in the 1940's/50's is still going strong.

Most hot rods and customs have some kind of hand decor and striping applied to the surface to add that special touch. Not only is it a personal thing, it has become a necessity if you want the paint job to look finished.

Application tricks and tips: 

• Always apply touch-up paint to a clean, dry vehicle. 
• Ideal temperature for application is 65F to 80F. 
• For best results, clean the area to be painted with a wax and grease remover prior to applying paint. 
• Apply multiple thin coats to achieve the smoothest finish. 
• Apply in a well ventilated area. 
• Always wear the glove that is included when working with touch-up paint. 

We guarantee a blend-able match for small rock chips and small nicks in the paint. In other words, if this is applied correctly to small chips, it will not be visible. We cannot guarantee that this will make a deep scratch disappear, nor will it fill a large repair area. If you have any issues, shoot us a picture, and we will do our best to help.

The paint on your vehicle can fade over time if not properly maintained. In most cases, you can have your car buffed out by a local auto detail shop to bring back the original shine. Our paint will dry with a slight gloss when applied correctly.
